Part two of the video series, Surrendered Sleep: A Biblical Perspective.
God is active as we sleep. In this video, we will explore how God protects and provides for us while we sleep. A calm heart knows that God has complete sovereignty and because of this understanding they experience His peace. My book, Surrendered Sleep: a Biblical Perspective – discusses how to get a good night’s sleep. God’s way. This video and post goes through some passages of the Bible where the Lord provided sleep for His servants.
Feel free to read these chapters in full and meditate on God’s power and love:
-
When Jesus sleeps on the boat in the storm (Mark 4:31-35)
"That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”
When Peter sleeps in jail before execution (Acts 12)
God gives Peter the ability to sleep despite the uncertainty that he must have felt at being imprisoned. When we realize that God has complete control of every moment of our lives, and that He is over even our suffering, we can rest easy trusting that He knows best.
When Elisha sleeps and armies surrounded him (2 Kings 6)
Even while Elisha slept, the Lord protected him. We can trust that God will work out His will in our lives and that because He has control of everything it will be good.
Psalm 121:
"I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. 2 My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth. 3 He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. 4 Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. 5 The Lord is thy keeper: the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand. 6 The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night. 7 The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. 8 The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore."
Knowing God’s protection, provision, and providence will help calm your heart as you sleep.
